External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar urged nations within the Global South to enhance their solidarity and commit to multilateralism while advocating for a collective push to reform the United Nations. His remarks came during a high-level meeting of like-minded Global South countries on Tuesday, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In a post shared on X, Jaishankar highlighted the urgency for coordinated efforts among Global South nations amidst increasing global concerns and diverse risks. He stated, “In the face of a proliferation of global concerns, it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions.”
To foster this unity, he outlined a structured approach comprising five key proposals aimed at amplifying the collective voice and influence of developing nations. One of his main points focused on leveraging existing forums to strengthen consultations among Global South countries, promoting enhanced solidarity and collaboration.
Jaishankar also emphasized the necessity of comprehensive reforms for the United Nations and urged that “multilateralism as a whole” requires attention. He advocated for the Global South to present its unique strengths and experiences on the international stage. He cited significant capabilities in vaccines, digital technologies, education, agro-practices, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as vital examples.
Further, he insisted on the need for an equitable approach to global challenges such as climate action and climate justice. Jaishankar argued that the Global South should spearhead initiatives aligned with its interests rather than merely aligning with the Global North’s perspectives.
In particular, he stressed the importance of engaging in discussions surrounding emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI), ensuring that developing countries are not sidelined in this evolving global landscape. “We must prioritize the interests of the Global South in shaping the technological future,” he stated.
India continues to champion the cause of the Global South in international forums, reiterating its dedication to ensuring that developing nations occupy a significant role in shaping the global agenda. The country’s efforts underscore its commitment to not just regional leadership, but also a more inclusive world order where all nations, especially the Global South, contribute significantly.
