Farooq Abdullah Commends J&K Tourism Revival Post-Pahalgam Attack

On September 27, National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah praised the Jammu and Kashmir government for its efforts to revive tourism after the tragic Pahalgam attack.

Abdullah expressed his support during the observance of World Tourism Day, recognizing the state’s commitment to reopening tourist destinations.

The attacks on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 people, primarily tourists, threatened the tourism sector in J&K, a vital lifeline for the region’s economy.

As the world highlighted the significance of tourism, Abdullah reflected on the impact that this sector has on the livelihoods of many in Jammu and Kashmir. He remarked, “Tourism is not merely an economic activity but a source of livelihood for thousands and an essential part of our social fabric.”

In his address, Abdullah acknowledged the swift actions taken by the Omar Abdullah-led government in the aftermath of the Pahalgam tragedy, emphasizing how these initiatives reinstated tourist confidence.

“The administration’s response was effective in restoring our reputation as a safe destination,” he said, underlining the long-term benefits of sustainable tourism growth.

The Lieutenant Governor of J&K, Manoj Sinha, ordered the reopening of several tourist destinations as a part of revitalizing the tourism sector. This action reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that J&K remains a premier tourist location.

Abdullah also called for inclusive development across J&K, advocating the need to focus on the Chenab and Pir Panjal regions, which he believes hold potential for significant tourism growth.

“We must ensure sustainable tourism models that protect our environment and preserve local cultures,” he added, urging stakeholders to remain committed to implementing best practices.

This World Tourism Day serves as a reminder of shared responsibility. Abdullah urged the community to create a peaceful and welcoming environment for tourists, stating, “Every visitor must feel valued, and every citizen should benefit from tourism-led growth.”

The revival of tourism in Jammu and Kashmir presents an opportunity not only to bolster the affected economy but also to showcase the unmatched natural beauty of the region. Abdullah’s remarks underline a pivotal moment for local tourism, where safety and sustainable practices will attract travelers back to this beautiful area.
