Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo Reviews Fruit Transportation in Kashmir

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo convened a high-level meeting today to discuss measures for ensuring the smooth transportation of fruit consignments from the Kashmir Valley to markets across the nation, particularly in light of recent disruptions.

This meeting gathered key figures, including the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Secretary of the Transport Department, Inspector General of Traffic, and various other officials, all focused on guaranteeing efficient transport operations.

During the assembly, Chief Secretary Dulloo assessed the current situation along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, known as NH-44. He specifically inquired about the flow of fruit-laden trucks moving from the Valley and the ongoing transit of essential goods into Kashmir.

In a decisive move to alleviate concerns, he instructed that no fruit truck should remain stranded on NH-44. He tasked relevant departments with ensuring safe and priority passage for these vital vehicles and demanded immediate action to clear vehicles trapped on both ends of the highway.

Considering potential long-term improvements, Dulloo urged the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, to investigate the feasibility of implementing rail freight services for transporting horticultural produce. He highlighted the need to connect major markets in cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru and emphasized the importance of engaging with local fruit growers and coordinating with the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Jammu.

The Divisional Commissioner responded positively, noting that adequate transportation facilities are in place and that fruit growers face few logistical challenges. This reassurance pointed towards a well-functioning transport system supporting local agriculture.

Avny Lavasa, the Secretary of the Transport Department, conveyed that should there be any shortage of transport vehicles, the J&K SRTC fleet stands ready to support the evacuation of fruit from the Valley. He expressed commitment to facilitating smooth movement towards external markets.

Reiterating the government’s unwavering commitment, Chief Secretary Dulloo declared that the administration is dedicated to ensuring seamless transportation of horticultural produce, emphasizing its essential role in sustaining Kashmir’s economy. He called for close cooperation between all departments and encouraged proactive measures to enable the smooth transport of fruit consignments throughout the ongoing harvest season.
