Thrombolysis for Stroke: Landmark Procedure at GMC Doda

In a groundbreaking development for emergency healthcare in the Chenab Valley, the Government Medical College (GMC) Doda performed its first-ever thrombolysis procedure for treating stroke on November 2, 2023. This milestone marks a significant advancement in medical services available in the region, ensuring timely treatment for stroke patients.

The procedure took place under the expert oversight of Principal Dr. Rakesh Bahl and Head of the Department of Medicine, Dr. Amir Hussain Parray. This notable achievement showcases the ability of GMC Doda to administer advanced, time-sensitive treatments locally, a major boon for residents in urgent need of care.

The patient, Roshan Lal from village Dolli in Gundna tehsil, arrived at GMC Doda displaying classic symptoms of a stroke. A dedicated medical team, led by Dr. Govinder Kumar (MD Medicine) along with Dr. Divyanshu (Resident Doctor) and Dr. Momin (Intern), promptly evaluated and initiated treatment for him. They received vital support from Mr. Rajinder Singh, Mr. Arif Mir, and the nursing staff, underscoring a strong collaborative effort within the hospital.

Medical staff reported that Roshan Lal responded positively to the thrombolytic therapy and is currently recovering well. Previously, patients experiencing acute strokes in the Doda region faced delays as they were transferred to GMC Jammu or other higher medical facilities, often compromising their chances of recovery. This new procedure now facilitates immediate access to world-class stroke management within the district itself.

Dr. Bahl praised the team’s efforts, calling this event “a landmark achievement for GMC Doda and a reassurance for thousands in remote areas who can now expect advanced treatment without the burden of travel.”

Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Parray stated, “This success mirrors our increasing capabilities and dedication to emergency medicine. It signifies not just medical progress but provides hope for the entire Chenab region.”

The community has widely celebrated this achievement, viewing it as a vital step toward bolstering rural healthcare infrastructure and saving lives during the critical golden hour following stroke onset. The thrombolysis procedure symbolizes GMC Doda’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services, potentially transforming the way stroke management is approached in rural India.
