In a remarkable achievement for neonatal healthcare, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed a newborn weighing an impressive 6 kilograms at birth. This milestone, celebrated by medical staff and the community, marks one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution.
The baby entered the world on 25th October 2025, at 1:20 PM, born to a mother diagnosed with diabetes. Within just 30 minutes of birth, the infant developed severe respiratory distress, prompting immediate transfer to the NICU for specialized care. GMC Doda’s team recognized the critical need for advanced neonatal support.
Upon admission, the medical team noted the baby’s large-for-gestational-age status, warranting urgent intervention. They initiated specialized respiratory support to manage the infant’s respiratory challenges effectively. Expert caregivers monitored vital signs including respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood glucose levels, temperature, and neurological responses closely.
Over the following days, the infant showed remarkable improvement, leading to a gradual reduction in respiratory assistance. The NICU team observed that the baby maintained stable conditions, showcasing the effectiveness of the treatment plan.
In the final 72 hours before discharge, the newborn exhibited independent breathing without any episodes of apnea or desaturation. The medical team celebrated this achievement as a sign of the baby’s recovery, along with stable oxygenation and temperature regulation.
After demonstrating robust clinical stability, the baby was formally discharged in good health, with follow-up appointments scheduled to ensure continued well-being. This successful case reflects the enhanced neonatal capabilities at GMC Doda.
Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of Pediatrics, praised the teamwork and dedication of GMC Doda’s pediatric staff. He highlighted the collaboration between faculty members, including Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma, along with their commitment to high-quality student training.
The NICU’s success comes from exceptional teamwork across departments. The nursing and paramedical teams deserve significant credit for their vigilant monitoring and compassionate care, which proved vital for the successful outcome of this case.
This achievement emphasizes GMC Doda’s unwavering commitment to providing quality, evidence-based, and compassionate neonatal care. The department’s continuous effort to improve care standards reflects its dedication to ensuring better health outcomes for newborns and children in the region.
