JKCA Resignation: Sunil Sethi Flags ‘Back-Dated Orders’

In a significant development for cricket governance in Jammu and Kashmir, Sunil Sethi, a member of the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) Sub-Committee, has resigned, citing issuing of ‘back-dated orders’ by the former Ombudsman. This resignation, addressed to BCCI President Mithun Manhas, marks a turning point in the association’s leadership dynamics.

Sethi’s resignation comes in the wake of a crucial ruling by the Supreme Court on 27 October, mandating that JKCA elections occur within 12 weeks under the supervision of former Chief Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Joti. This order highlights ongoing governance issues within JKCA, raising questions about the integrity of its administrative processes.

Elaborating on his decision, Sethi expressed deep concern over actions taken by the former Ombudsman. In his resignation letter, he stated, “As the Supreme Court has directed holding of elections of JKCA and the effort to appoint a new Ombudsman has not been approved by the Election Officer till the formation of the General Body, unfortunately, back-dated orders are being issued by the former Ombudsman now, dating them back to March 2025.”

These allegations carry significant implications for JKCA’s management and electoral process. Sethi pointed out, “These orders are changing the club management and voting rights. This is to change the voting nomenclature, which I do not wish to be party to.” His remarks underscore his commitment to transparency and adherence to judicial directives in the wake of what he perceives as undermine of the electoral process.

In the concluding remarks of his resignation, Sethi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, saying, “As such, I tender my resignation from Member Sub-Committee. Please accept and relieve me. I am thankful for the opportunity the Board has bestowed on me.” This resignation not only shakes up the JKCA leadership but also prompts calls for a thorough review of governance practices.

The turmoil within the JKCA comes at a critical time for cricket in Jammu and Kashmir, a region that has witnessed developments in the sport’s grassroots infrastructure. Following the Supreme Court ruling, stakeholders look forward to more stable and transparent governance.

With the elections approaching, the JKCA faces the task of ensuring that its activities align with judicial expectations and the needs of its members. Experts suggest that a renewed focus on transparency and proper governance is necessary to restore credibility in the association.

Cricket enthusiasts in Jammu and Kashmir remain hopeful that the upcoming elections will usher in a new era for cricket administration, one that promotes fairness and inclusivity. As Sethi’s resignation highlights systemic flaws, the forthcoming electoral process could be pivotal in reshaping the future landscape of cricket in the region.
