Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday alleged that every sixth BJP MP in the Lok Sabha secured their position through “vote chori.” He raised the question of whether these members should be referred to as “ghuspethiya,” a term from the BJP’s own lexicon.
Gandhi presented his accusations during a post on X, where he highlighted that roughly 40 of the 240 BJP members of parliament won their seats through alleged electoral malpractice. He asserted that if fair elections were conducted, the BJP would be unable to secure even 140 seats in the Lok Sabha.
“Through vote theft, sometimes individual seats are stolen, and at other times, an entire government. The manipulation of electoral processes raises serious questions about the legitimacy of their victories,” he stated emphatically.
In a scathing critique of the ruling government, Gandhi categorically labeled the current BJP regime in Haryana as a ‘ghuspethiya’ government. He pointed to institutional controls and mechanisms that allegedly distort voter lists and undermine the electoral process in favor of the ruling party.
“Their real fear is the truth. For if fair elections were to be held, they would not be able to win even 140 seats today,” Gandhi emphasized. This statement comes on the heels of the BJP’s recent assembly poll victories in states like Bengal and Assam, which Gandhi previously termed a “theft” of the public mandate.
On Tuesday, Gandhi took to social media, expressing solidarity with the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which faced significant losses to the BJP in Bengal. He called out those who celebrated TMC’s defeat, highlighting that these victories for the BJP represented a broader threat to the fabric of Indian democracy.
“Some in the Congress and others are gloating about TMC’s loss. They need to understand this clearly – the theft of Assam and Bengal’s mandate is a major step forward in the BJP’s mission to destroy Indian democracy,” Gandhi stated.
Asserting that the current political strife transcends party lines, Gandhi urged all political players to compartmentalize their differences and focus on larger national interests. He remarked, “Put petty politics aside. This is not about one party or another. This is about India.”
The BJP’s recent assembly poll victories saw the party oust the Trinamool Congress from power in Bengal and secure a third consecutive term in Assam as results were declared on Monday, further consolidating its position in Indian politics.
These developments have sparked widespread debate across political circles, with Gandhi’s statements echoing concerns about the integrity of electoral processes in the country. In light of this, political analysts emphasize the importance of maintaining fair and transparent elections to uphold democratic values in India.
