The annual Amarnath Yatra has faced a setback as authorities suspended the pilgrimage from the Baltal route on Friday, August 11, 2023, due to adverse weather conditions and essential repair work on the trekking track.
Heavy rains struck the Baltal area late Thursday night, leading to a minor flash flood in one location. Fortunately, officials reported no loss of life or property damage resulting from the downpour.
The yatra had already been halted from the Pahalgam route for necessary repairs, indicating the widespread impact of inclement weather on both paths leading to the holy site.
To prioritize safety, officials confirmed that no pilgrims could proceed towards the revered cave shrine from the Baltal route until conditions improve and the repairs are completed.
Officials monitoring the situation said repairs are currently ongoing and expressed hope that the yatra could resume soon if weather conditions stabilize. The annual pilgrimage commenced on July 3, 2023, with approximately 4.5 lakh devotees having paid their respects at the shrine housing the naturally formed ice lingam.
The yatra traditionally concludes on August 28, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, a time when many devotees seek blessings from Lord Shiva.
Authorities urge prospective pilgrims to stay updated on weather forecasts and official announcements to ensure their safety during the yatra. With fluctuating weather patterns becoming a concern, travelers are advised to prepare accordingly.
