Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) protested on Tuesday in the Parliament House complex against alleged donation thefts at the Ram temple in Ayodhya and the police’s heavy-handed actions against student demonstrators. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra led the protest alongside other leaders, raising concerns about financial transparency regarding the temple’s funds and demanding accountability from the government.
The protest took place in front of the Makar Dwar of Parliament, with MPs carrying placards that bore slogans like ‘chhanda chor, gaddi chor’ and ‘Amit Shah jawaab do’. These slogans expressed the growing disenchantment among opposition leaders regarding the handling of the Ram temple donations by the ruling government.
To symbolize the alleged theft, the protesting MPs set up donation boxes at the protest site. They gathered around these boxes and shouted slogans, highlighting their demand for justice. Some MPs even placed cash into the boxes to signify the contributions made towards the temple and the subsequent theft of these donations.
Among the notable participants in the protest were SP leaders Dimple Yadav and Dharmendra Yadav, TMC’s Sagarika Ghose, RJD’s Sanjay Yadav and Manoj Jha, and RSP’s NK Premchandran. This coalition illustrates the unity of various opposition parties against the alleged mismanagement of temple funds.
As the protest continued, the MPs stood behind a large banner that questioned the absence of Home Minister Amit Shah from Parliament, demanding his presence to address their grievances. This visual display underlined the urgency of the issues at hand, particularly given Shah’s previous importance in governing matters pertaining to national faith and security.
The opposition coalition, known as the INDIA bloc, has vowed to challenge the government on the allegations of donation theft at the Ram temple and the brutal police response against student protests seen last week. The unity in this bloc signifies a determined front against the current government’s handling of sensitive issues.
In a strategic move, floor leaders from the INDIA bloc met in the chamber of the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, shortly before the protest. They deliberated on their tactics to pressurize the government regarding these pressing issues, aiming to leverage public sentiment in their favor.
This demonstration also sheds light on the broader context of political discontent in India, where issues related to religious sentiments and student rights often ignite significant public discourse and activism. The MPs have expressed their commitment to holding the government accountable for its actions and ensuring the voices of students and the faithful are heard.
