Omar Abdullah Unveils Gulmarg Convention Centre: Asia’s New Davos

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the much-anticipated Gulmarg Convention Centre today, positioning the area to become a global focal point for international events. The ceremony took place in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to position the resort town as ‘the Asian Davos.’

The new convention centre, constructed at a cost of Rs 21 crore by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), aims to significantly enhance tourism, cultural engagements, and international conferencing in the region.

In attendance were key figures including Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, Gulmarg MLA Pirzada Farooq A Shah, and various officials from different government sectors.

Gulmarg Convention Centre: A Boost to Tourism

During his address, Abdullah stressed the importance of not just building infrastructure but also maintaining and utilizing it effectively. “While we can construct the physical structures, the real responsibility begins with their use and proper upkeep,” he stated, underscoring the importance of integrating the convention centre into the local economy.

He announced plans to link the Gulmarg Convention Centre with existing marketing networks, suggesting that it could complement the already established Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) network.

Transforming Gulmarg into a MICE Hub

Omar Abdullah also highlighted the potential of the convention centre to host Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism. “I envision international events that will attract global attendees,” he said, asserting the importance of making the central hub a destination for high-profile events and weddings.

The facility will also include a Ski Hire Shop, set to be developed by the J&K Cable Car Corporation. This initiative aims to enhance the infrastructure and tourism facilities in the winter sports capital.

Creating Evening Recreational Opportunities

Beyond conferences and events, Abdullah noted a lack of activities for visitors during evenings in Gulmarg. “After skiing and sightseeing, tourists need engaging experiences to enjoy their evenings,” he said.

Plans to establish a coffee shop, restaurant, and cinema projection system were discussed as a part of fostering a vibrant environment that could offer tourists more than just winter sports.

Optimizing Utilization of the New Centre

The Chief Minister urged various government departments to utilize the new convention centre for organizational meetings, training programs, and official functions. “This will ensure proper usage while diversifying the tourism offerings in Gulmarg,” he stated.

His remarks reflect a strong commitment to turning the new Gulmarg Convention Centre into a bustling hub for both business and leisure tourism, vital for economic growth.

In closing, Abdullah praised the collaboration between the NBCC and the Gulmarg Development Authority, asserting that the convention centre is a landmark addition to Gulmarg’s tourism landscape. “With effective management, this centre can evolve into a vibrant locale for international gatherings and cultural tourism,” he concluded.
