Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Autumn Session Begins on October 13

The Jammu & Kashmir cabinet, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has officially recommended summoning the Legislative Assembly on October 13. This session will potentially impact state governance and address critical issues such as statehood and reservation.

The cabinet meeting, which commenced on Wednesday morning, included all ministers and aimed to ensure compliance with the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.

As per the Act, there must not be a gap exceeding six months between the end of one session and the start of the next. The previous session concluded on April 29, necessitating the new session by October 28.

Sources indicate that this upcoming session will last approximately seven days, from October 13 to 20. Legislators expect discussions to pivot around pressing topics, with statehood and reservation being at the forefront.

In the last assembly session, statehood issues dominated discussions, but several resolutions lapsed due to disruptions, particularly from legislators of the National Conference. The house experienced significant unrest following the rejection of an adjournment motion concerning the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

During past discussions, Sajad Gani Lone, President of the People’s Conference and MLA from Handwara, raised strong objections regarding the government’s handling of reservation topics, indicating ongoing challenges in legislative discourse.

This assembly session marks a critical juncture for Jammu & Kashmir as leaders negotiate political paths forward. The stability of governance and the needs of constituents remain at the core of decision-making processes. Observers keenly anticipate how this session will unfold in light of the pressing issues at hand.

As the community looks toward October 13, the political landscape in Jammu & Kashmir remains dynamic and complex. The assembly’s proceedings will serve as a litmus test for governance and representation in the region.
