CM Omar Abdullah Sanctions ₹30.14 Crore for Welfare Programs

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, serving as Chairman of the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB), has sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for direct online transfer to eligible beneficiaries under various welfare schemes. This release aims to support the welfare of registered construction workers across Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials confirm that the allocated amount will be immediately transferred into the bank accounts of registered construction workers through all Assistant Labour Commissioners. This swift action will enhance the financial security of thousands of workers in the construction sector.

The funds cover a wide array of flagship welfare schemes by the Labour Department. These include education support, disability assistance, aid for chronic illness, and support for the next of kin of deceased workers. Moreover, the budget includes marriage assistance and meritorious awards for children of registered workers, reflecting the government’s commitment to holistic support.

During the recent 22nd meeting of JKBOCWWB held in July, Abdullah emphasized the necessity for a more inclusive definition of ‘construction worker’. He aims to ensure that more vulnerable labourers in the unorganized sector can reap the benefits of these welfare measures. Inclusion remains key, as the government seeks to prioritize those who often slip through the cracks.

“Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” Abdullah stated, reinforcing his administration’s ongoing commitment to labour rights and dignity. He assured that policies would continually adapt to incorporate innovative approaches aligned with national best practices in labour welfare.

In a separate statement, the Chief Minister expressed profound grief concerning a harrowing bus accident involving Indian Umrah pilgrims in Medina, Saudi Arabia, early this morning. Reports indicate that the bus, transporting 46 pilgrims, collided with a tanker on its route from Mecca to Medina.

This tragic incident has reportedly claimed the lives of 45 pilgrims, leaving just one survivor, who suffered serious injuries. Abdullah extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured. Consulate officials are working to support the families and provide necessary assistance during this distressing time.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration stands resolute in supporting both welfare initiatives domestically and responding compassionately to national tragedies abroad. With these strategic allocations and expressions of empathy, Abdullah’s government demonstrates a holistic commitment to the wellbeing of its people.
