The Congress party sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday regarding the alarming rise in unemployment in India, with claims that he remains perpetually “in election mode” rather than providing real solutions. Congress general secretary and communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh stressed that the unfortunate situation reflects a national crisis, impacting various sectors and demographics.
In a pointed statement, Ramesh traced the roots of the crisis to the past eleven years of governance under Modi, blaming his administration for adversely affecting every section of society. He expressed concern that while challenges around unemployment became dire, Modi’s focus remains on crafting speeches rather than devising effective economic strategies.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Ramesh conveyed the desperation felt by Indians from all walks of life, saying, “Students, youth, farmers, labourers, workers, shopkeepers, employees, businessmen – not a single section is happy with this government. Inflation is skyrocketing, the value of the rupee is continuously falling, and the gap between the rich and poor is widening, making life difficult for poor and middle-class families.”
Highlighting the urgency of the issue, Ramesh noted that according to the latest statistics from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), India’s unemployment rate climbed to 7.5% in October 2025, marking the highest figure in the past six months. The figures paint a grim picture, suggesting that millions lost jobs across various sectors, particularly in construction and IT.
“Over 90 lakh people have lost their jobs in construction alone, while there is a reported decline of 25 lakh salaried jobs,” Ramesh stated, underscoring the breadth of the crisis.
The Congress spokesperson further claimed that these alarming job loss figures have persisted for years, yet the government seems indifferent to the pain of unemployed youth. Ramesh directly addressed the Prime Minister, remarking, “It seems Modi ji has no concern for the youth of this country. Always in election mode, he is busy crafting new speeches and narratives to distract the public instead of solving the unemployment crisis.”
The criticisms from the Congress party resonate with a growing concern among citizens about the Indian economy. The party contends that the government’s emphasis on political rhetoric overshadows the pressing need for tangible economic reforms and job creation.
Many experts echo Ramesh’s sentiments. Renowned economist Dr. Raghuram Rajan has previously discussed the importance of addressing employment and wages comprehensively. He noted, “Addressing unemployment is critical for the overall health of the economy. Without jobs, families struggle to maintain their standards of living.” This reiterates the Congress’s call for genuine reform to alleviate the economic burden faced by average citizens.
