Curfew Imposed in Ladakh After Intense Clashes; 50 Detained

Authorities imposed a strict curfew in Leh, Ladakh, on Thursday after violence erupted on Wednesday, resulting in four fatalities and over 89 injuries. The unrest stemmed from a shutdown initiated by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) to push for statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh.

The clashes, marked by arson and street confrontations, signify the rising tensions in the region. As police and paramilitary forces reinforced security measures, they detained at least 50 individuals involved in the unrest. Officials confirmed no further incidents occurred during the curfew, emphasizing the situation is under control.

The tensions escalated when the LAB organized a shutdown to facilitate discussions with the central government regarding their long-standing demands. Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike, called for solidarity from local residents, prompting protests that spiraled into violence.

Authorities reported that the protesters vandalized the BJP office and damaged several vehicles, leading to the enforcement of the indefinite curfew. Kargil District Magistrate Rakesh Kumar issued prohibitory orders, banning the assembly of five or more persons in Kargil and other towns.

Police implemented stringent measures across Ladakh, including in Kargil, Zanskar, Nubra, and other areas, to prevent any further escalation of violence. The guidelines explicitly prohibited large gatherings, processions, and unauthorized speeches or public statements likely to disturb peace.

The unrest’s roots trace back to the hunger strike initiated on September 10, during which two participants required hospitalization, spurring the LAB to call for protests. Additional reports highlight a police investigation surrounding potential foreign involvement in the unrest, as three injured individuals were citizens of Nepal.

The home ministry condemned the violence, attributing it to “politically motivated” individuals dissatisfied with the progress of governmental talks with Ladakhi representatives. “The Centre is committed to addressing the aspirations of the people of Ladakh,” the ministry stated.

In response to the violence, Lt. Governor Kavinder Gupta referred to the events as “heart-wrenching.” He stressed that while peaceful expression is a right, the recent actions stemmed from a conspiracy rather than spontaneous unrest. The curfew serves to protect citizens and maintain order.

Wangchuk, addressing the situation in an online press conference, indicated that the health crisis of two hunger strikers triggered the immediate protests. He implored the youth of Ladakh to cease violent actions that jeopardize their collective cause. “We do not want instability in Ladakh and the country,” Wangchuk reiterated, reflecting on the sobering developments impacting Ladakh’s socio-political climate.

As discussions with the central government approach, set for October 6, stakeholders and residents remain on edge, hopeful for a resolution that respects the historical and cultural context of Ladakh.
