The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully launched the Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based mobile launcher, marking a significant advancement in India’s defence capabilities. The launch occurred under a full operational scenario on October 12, 2023, in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC).
This next-generation missile can cover a range of up to 2,000 km and features advanced technology designed for efficiency and effectiveness. It incorporates state-of-the-art communication systems and protection mechanisms which enhance its operational capability.
The historic launch took place from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher that can operate on the rail network without any pre-conditions. This feature affords cross-country mobility and enables a rapid launch with reduced visibility.
The Agni-Prime missile can launch quickly, allowing the Indian armed forces to respond to threats with agility. The missile’s launch trajectory was meticulously tracked by various ground stations, confirming that the operation met all mission objectives.
Senior scientists from DRDO and officers from SFC attended the launch, illustrating the collaborative effort involved in this successful test.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his congratulations to DRDO, SFC, and the Indian Armed Forces following the successful test of the Agni-Prime missile. In a statement, he highlighted that this successful flight test positions India among a select group of nations capable of developing canisterised launch systems from rail networks.
“This missile’s features, paired with its launch capabilities, represent a leap forward for India’s strategic deterrent,” Singh stated in a post on X.
He further emphasized, “This milestone has reaffirmed India’s commitment to its national security and our readiness to protect our sovereignty.”
The Agni-Prime, part of the Agni missile family, follows the successful induction of the road-mobile version, further enhancing India’s deterrent capabilities.
The Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO commended the team efforts that culminated in this noteworthy achievement, emphasizing the importance of the Agni-Prime in the future of India’s strategic defence.
