First Freight Train Carrying Industrial Salt Arrives in Kashmir from Gujarat

SRINAGAR: In a landmark development for freight transportation in the Kashmir Valley, the maiden train carrying industrial salt from Gujarat arrived in Kashmir on Friday, marking a major step in facilitating trade, reducing travel time, and lowering logistics costs in the region.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) Uchit Singhal of the Jammu Railway Division, Northern Railway, stated that the 21-wagon (BCN) consignment comprising 1,350 tonnes of industrial salt from Kharaghoda goods shed, Gujarat, reached Anantnag goods shed on Friday. The industrial salt is primarily used in tanning, pulp soap, and brick kiln industries.

“This milestone reflects the growing capability of rail freight to ensure a continuous supply of essential commodities to the Valley, reducing dependence on road transport, especially during adverse weather conditions,” said Singhal.

He highlighted that in recent months, the Jammu Railway Division has made significant progress in freight transportation in the region. Earlier shipments, including apples from Kashmir to Delhi and Maruti vehicles to the Valley, have already provided faster and more economical avenues for trade.

Singhal added, “The arrival of industrial salt by rail is expected to pave the way for increased freight traffic in the future, further strengthening trade links between Gujarat and J&K. Indian Railways continues to expand the logistics network, ensuring efficient movement of essential and commercial goods for the benefit of both businesses and residents.”
