In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing an astonishing 6 kilograms at birth. This case marks one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at this esteemed institution.
Born on 25th October 2025, at 1:20 PM, the baby came from a diabetic mother and exhibited severe respiratory distress within the initial 30 minutes of life. Understanding the urgent need for specialized care, the newborn was quickly admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced management.
Given the infant’s large-for-gestational-age status and evident respiratory difficulties, the medical team initiated specialized neonatal respiratory support. The healthcare professionals closely monitored various parameters, including respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity. Over the following days, the infant gradually showed positive responses, allowing the clinical team to carefully wean off the respiratory support.
In the final 72 hours before discharge, the baby demonstrated stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation. There were no further episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. After showing sustained clinical stability, the newborn was discharged in healthy condition with a recommendation for routine follow-up.
