Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu Secures Vir Chakra for Gallantry

Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu of the Indian Air Force (IAF) has received the prestigious Vir Chakra award for his gallantry during Operation Sindoor, which took place in May. This recognition highlights his exemplary courage and tactical prowess amidst intense combat.

The Government Gazette published on October 4 details the remarkable feats of Group Captain Sidhu, noting that he “flew multiple deep-penetration strike missions to destroy designated targets with surgical precision.” His operations unfolded under “complex threat scenarios and layered air defences,” showcasing his exceptional skill.

During the four-day military conflict between India and Pakistan, Sidhu led his squadron, equipped with advanced fighter aircraft, to successfully navigate hostile airspace, fulfilling all mission objectives assigned to them.

The citation emphasizes that “as the Commanding Officer, Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu exhibited exceptional acts of gallantry, resolute leadership, and unwavering dedication to duty” despite the dangers involved. His actions underscore the vital role of leadership in a high-intensity operational environment.

Sidhu’s operational planning occurred from three different locations along the Western sector. He not only commanded the missions but also made “dynamic, real-time decisions” to effectively address evolving threats. His bold leadership significantly contributed to mission success and ensured the safety of his team.

The IAF’s strategy gained an “enhanced offensive posture” under his command, which was instrumental in the success of these operations, as highlighted in the official statement.

Nine IAF pilots received the Vir Chakra for their bravery during Operation Sindoor. Their missions targeted terrorist infrastructures and military installations in Pakistan-controlled territories in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. The Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award, aptly reflects their courage.

Among other notable recipients, Group Captains Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra were also awarded. Group Captain Arora’s citation praised his leadership and bravery, stating that he conducted an unescorted strike mission through heavily defended airspace, achieving pinpoint accuracy despite facing significant threats.

Another remarkable awardee, Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik, received accolades for his “resolute valour” during his missions. His audacious manoeuvres created tactical confusion among enemy formations, showcasing his quick-thinking in combat.

These gallantry awards approved by President Droupadi Murmu include a total of 127 recognitions, alongside 40 distinguished service awards on the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day.
