India upgraded its mission in Kabul to full embassy status on Friday, signifying a pivotal move in re-establishing its diplomatic presence in Afghanistan. This announcement followed the meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi.
Following the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, India withdrew its officials from the Kabul embassy. In June 2022, a technical team returned to facilitate minimal operations. The decision to upgrade signifies India’s intent to enhance its engagement with Afghanistan, with an emphasis on humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and regional security.
In his opening remarks, Jaishankar highlighted the importance of the Afghan Foreign Minister’s visit, stating, “Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan.” He reiterated India’s commitment to the development and progress of Afghanistan, as a contiguous neighbor.
Jaishankar referenced India’s historical partnership with Afghanistan, which has included numerous significant projects. He commended the Taliban administration for exhibiting “sensitivity towards India’s security concerns,” especially in light of recent security challenges such as the Pahalgam terror attack.
Underlining shared challenges, Jaishankar stated, “We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.” Both nations face the persistent threat of cross-border terrorism, which requires collaborative strategies for effective counteraction.
Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi recognized India’s role as a key regional player that has consistently supported the Afghan people. He praised India’s humanitarian contributions and indicated Kabul’s desire to foster growth in trade, infrastructure, and education.
The elevation of India’s diplomatic mission to embassy status indicates New Delhi’s careful yet strategic re-engagement with the Taliban-led government. This move is rooted in recognizing historic ties and actively pursuing stability in the region.
