Minister Javed Ahmed Rana Urges Tribal Heritage Preservation

On October 5, 2023, in a powerful address at the Mendhar Tribal Mela in Sagra, Poonch, Javed Ahmed Rana, the Minister for Tribal Affairs, highlighted the urgent need for collective and sustained efforts to protect and promote the tribal values that define communities in the Pir Panjal region. His remarks echoed a broader commitment to cultural preservation in the face of rapid modernization.

Rana articulated a vision where development must not come at the cost of cultural erosion. He called for an integrative approach that harmonizes economic progress with the preservation of rich tribal traditions, asserting that unchecked modernization threatens to dilute the essence of tribal customs and moral frameworks.

The Minister referred to the Omar Abdullah Government’s commitment to fostering inclusive development that champions a resilient, self-reliant tribal society. His praise for the Tribal Affairs Department and local administration’s efforts in organizing the Mela underscored its significance as a meaningful step towards development with dignity.

During the celebration, the vibrant atmosphere showcased the richness of tribal heritage, food, and traditional wisdom. Local stalls featured indigenous cuisines, medicinal plants, and healthcare knowledge systems, offering attendees a chance to engage with their cultural roots. Notably, a free medical camp served the community by providing essential health consultations and services.

Rana’s presence at the event reflected the government’s determination to ensure that development policies remain grounded in practical tribal experiences while simultaneously celebrating local culture and heritage.

Attendees of the Mela included Chairperson DDC Poonch Tazeem Akhtar, Deputy Commissioner Poonch Ashok Kumar Sharma, and various senior officials, alongside a large crowd from the local community. Their collective presence underlined the significance of preserving tribal identity amidst the pressures of modern development.

The Mendhar Tribal Mela embodies a concerted effort to not only celebrate tribal culture but also to engage in a dialogue about sustainable development that respects and retains the integrity of indigenous lifestyles. As Minister Rana emphasized, these efforts are crucial for safeguarding the future of tribal communities in the Pir Panjal region and beyond.
