Srinagar Shivers at -2.1°C: Coldest Night This Winter

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a bone-chilling temperature of -2.1°C last night, marking the coldest night this winter, according to the Meteorological Department (MeT). This sudden drop in temperature has sent shivers through the region, signaling the onset of winter.

In addition to Srinagar, Pahalgam emerged as the coldest spot in the Kashmir Valley, where temperatures dipped to an even harsher -3.8°C. These frigid conditions highlight the intense cold gripping the region, as local residents brace for more harsh weather.

Director of MeT, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, informed that there is no expectation of any wet spell for the next week. He indicated that the night temperatures are likely to remain stable until November 17. Furthermore, Dr. Ahmad noted the possibility of a slight recovery in night temperatures for two to three days following this date.

The plummeting mercury levels have resulted in frost formation across various parts of Srinagar and the surrounding areas during the early morning hours. This phenomenon not only showcases the bitter cold but also serves as a traditional marker for the harsh winter season prevalent in the region.

Residents have begun to adapt to the cold, employing various methods such as bundling up in warm clothing and using heaters to fend off the chill. With conditions expected to persist, it is essential for residents to prepare adequately for the upcoming winter months. The region’s social fabric often revolves around these seasonal changes, with communities coming together to share warmth and resources.

Experts advising on health measures during such cold spells urge individuals, particularly the elderly and children, to be vigilant about potential health risks associated with extreme cold conditions. Various local health authorities are on alert, ensuring that necessary precautions are shared with the public.
